Even though Woodstock had the number one Premier Division
striker in its ranks (J. Wright # 8 - 16 goals), one got the
feeling that the team in white - as St. Thomas did just a
week earlier in the Premier Cup Final versus AEK - would
have difficulty in scoring. AEK ranked much higher than
Woodstock in goals scored in the regular season and had
allowed much fewer in terms of goals against. In fact, in
regular season play AEK only allowed 13 goals in 18 games
while Woodstock allowed 32 goals in 18 games played.
Nevertheless in a single 90-minute period theoretically
anything could happen.
With the opening whistle Woodstock came out strong, moving
the ball up field fairly quickly and openly challenging AEK
midfielders in their own zone. This sudden spurt was not to
last though, as subsequent to this AEK's very cohesive
approach to the game had Woodstock looking outnumbered on
almost each and every play. AEK played as a unit while
defending, and played as a unit while on offense as well.
And as usual, their keeper took on a vociferous and
influential role in managing team responses to Woodstock
thrusts.
Significant pressure was put on the Woodstock goal through
the first half, and their keeper performed quite well until
the 29 minute mark. At this point in the game AEK's Paul
Arnold #19 broke the scoreless tie. He received a pass
unopposed perhaps 10 metres to the right of the centre box
boundary, travelled with the ball to that point, then let a
hard, slightly curving left footed shot go that found the
top left corner of the net.
The rest of the half remained scoreless with quality shots
on net heavily favouring AEK.
With the opening of the second half Woodstock remained
determined to compete and almost immediately the play got
somewhat rougher. Numerous infractions were called as
Woodstock was forced to repeatedly defend their territory in
the wake of nearly continuous AEK advances.
In perhaps two or three instances Woodstock strikers put
serious pressure on the AEK goal, but somehow they just
could not convert. As the game wore on Woodstock began
having difficulty in tackling and effectively clearing the
ball up field. This state of affairs continued roughly
until the end of the game, when in the final minute AEK's #
12 Ahmad Birani beat his man near the centre entrance to the
box and went in unopposed toward the goal, firing a rolling
shot that found the bottom right corner of the net making it
2-0.
Moments later the final whistle blew, with AEK claiming not
only the Premier Cup, but the League Cup Championship as
well. JHS |
