"WALLACEBURG MUSCLES ITS WAY TO ANOTHER WIN"

Strathroy Portuguese-Canadian Club (Strathroy):  Near perfect conditions set the stage for this excellent match-up between Wallaceburg and Strathroy in WOSL First Division action.

Although Mr. Rui Xavier, Strathroy's President and General Manager couldn't say enough about how much his team had improved while in the hands of their new coach, Anthony Camacho, the team in white was facing up against the Division leading Wallaceburg Sting, a team that had been scored on only four times in ten games.  Strathroy was coming in with a respectable +1 plus/minus rating however, and was sporting some fresh talent brought in early in the season by Camacho.

From the opening whistle it was apparent that both these teams wanted the win, and both were willing to play hard and fight for it.  Although the play was brisk, there were few stoppages and the ball moved quickly up and down the through the mid-field areas.  Wallaceburg's cohesiveness, discipline, and co-operative style of play quickly became apparent, and so was their overall level of physical strength and their drive to succeed.

Strathroy was not outmatched in speed however, and had plenty of talent to utilize in pursuit of the win.  Through the majority of the first half the ball was controlled well by Wallaceburg and was worked steadily up the field into their offensive zone, yet Wallaceburg strikers had some difficulty getting quality shots off once in the area of the box - mainly due to the feisty Strathroy defenders that stood them up and stopped them at the line.

Curiously enough and at the same time it was Strathroy, although with fewer opportunities, getting by far the better quality chances to score at the other end.  Not only did they register the first two shots on net of the game, through the first half they tested the keeper more often (including a very hard "one-time" shot out of mid-air that deflected off the left post at 44 minutes) and had more near misses than the team in red.  Regardless the first half ended scoreless.

With the opening of the second half both teams style of play remained similar, although at a noticeably higher level of intensity.  Wallaceburg's determination was apparent, yet Strathroy's ability to generate quality chances when given the opportunity was visible as well.

To the delight of the fans in the stands, around the field, and on the Club's balcony the second half featured nearly continuous action - and a very quick pace.  The stalemate was not to last however, as two Wallaceburg strikers broke in all alone with only the keeper between them and the netting at 80 minutes.  Subsequent to a short pass it was #25 (in red) driving the ball into the bottom right corner putting Wallaceburg up 1-nil.

Wallaceburg's physical presence seemed to wear Strathroy down as the half wore on, and it was likely only a question of time before a defensive miscue would cost them another game.  Wallaceburg was also perhaps lucky, as the Strathroy strikers did create some decent opportunities, especially on various crossing plays and corner kicks.  Nevertheless the Wallaceburg keeper held steady, and he ended the game with a shutout, and their ninth win of what was so far, a near-perfect season.  JHS
