"WHITE EAGLES DOWN MARCONI 6-0 IN NILESTOWN"

Polish-Canadian Club (Nilestown): Sunny and warm conditions set the stage for this late-season Premier Division contest between the White Eagles and Marconi.

Coming off a 2-0 loss to Portuguese a week earlier, the White Eagles were apparently in no mood for defeat.  From the opening whistle it could be seen that they were ready for Marconi while playing in front of the home crowd.  The team in red took a defensive stance against the visitors in blue and allowed them to work the ball perhaps 20 metres into their zone before launching their counter-attack.

This strategy was definitely effective as the White Eagles then cut through Marconi defenders by way of tightly executed passing plays that often penetrated nearly to the goal line.  At only 2 minutes in it was the White Eagle's Mark Magier # 13 scoring on just such a finesse play that drove deep into Marconi's goal zone - successfully putting one in in tic-tac-toe fashion.  This would be the first of three goals for Mr. Magier in this game.

Indeed both sides demonstrated excellent passing, on-field communication and ball control, the only difference was that White Eagles strikers were nearly continually effective, and Marconi's were not.  At 42 minutes the White Eagles struck again, and this time is was Yoan Kagoma # 16 finding the mesh on another fine display of passing and dribbling skill.  This would be the first of two goals for Mr. Kagoma.

Only three minutes later is was Kuba Waszkowski # 9 showcasing his speed and skill as he delicately outmaneuvered a defender and beat the Marconi keeper to make it 3-nil just before the half came to a close.

With the opening of the second half Marconi came out with renewed intensity and made many forceful efforts to push the play into the White Eagles zone.  The team in red appeared prepared for exactly this as they pumped up their transition game in return.

At 48 minutes in it was again Kagoma # 16 posting a marker on a high shot that went nearly right over the keeper and into the net from fairly close range.  Marconi did in no way give up, in fact they kept on attacking as they had done through most of the game, however White Eagles midfielders and defensive corps proved to be just too much of a challenge.

At 57 minutes tempers flared and a White Eagles player was ejected from the game.  At this point Marconi seemed to still believe that they had a chance.  Much of the same type of play ensued, with the White Eagles cautiously defending their lead while playing a man down.  Through the midsection of the half Marconi finally began to get some quality shots on goal, but the closest they would come would be a hard curving shot of the left post at 78 minutes.

At both 81 minutes and 87 minutes it was the White Eagle's Mark Magier #13 scoring again, one on a soft shot that took advantage of another defensive breakdown and another on a well-placed kick into the middle of the net from just outside the penalty box on the right side.  The game would end just a few minutes later with a score of 6-0 favouring the White Eagles, who with this win rose to fourth place with 24 points in the Premier Division standings.  JHS
